Teaching Philosophy
I am a very well rounded teacher, so my teaching style varies day to day. I understand that not all students gain information simply from a lecture. They need to get up and be active to learn. Not all students can watch a video and gain the same knowledge as the person sitting next to them, they actually need to hear their teacher explain what is going on and why it is happening. I always needed a variety of teaching styles to reach out to myself as a student, so I understand the importance of including various teaching styles in a classroom. In order for students to learn, they need to have a teacher who will commit to helping them succeed.
Student learning should continue to happen even after school. My goal is to get students motivated to learn and become excited to continue their learning even after
their school days with me. I believe that learning should happen both inside and outside of the classroom in order for a student to fully succeed in my classroom. I will encourage students to bring real world issues found in literature into the classroom via blogs, Facebook, Twitter, newspaper articles, etc. and discuss them along with our novels in class. It is important for students to make connections to what is happening around them, otherwise they won't understand why they are learning the literature at hand.
By using different forms of literature that students may not have even known was considered literature, I will reach out to everyone in my classroom and encourage my students to think outside of the box. This will allow students to become more creative and to question what literature really is and what it means to be literate. My goal is to diversify my students and to expose them to different forms of literature and writing styles. While the classics are great to study, new forms of literature will also be included in my classroom because students may relate to the new forms better than the old. I never read a graphic novel in school because it was not a classic and therefore it was thought that this type of literature should not be taught. I will definitely include graphic novels into my curriculum, as well as informational texts, documentaries, plays, and comics because I realize this will give me a better opportunity to reach out to everyone at least once in my classroom by showing them that if they don't feel a connection with one text, they may feel a connection with another. It is the teacher's job to help students find the text that identifies with them the most, and I fully intend to do that.
