Substitute Teaching
I have been hired as a full time Long Term Substitute Teacher at both Illini West and West Prairie High Schools. I have been employed to teach Computer Concepts and Introduction to Accounting. Computer Concepts consisted of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access. For Introduction to Accounting, I used the Aplia program to assist in my lessons. With my degree being in English and my minor being in Music, this was definitely a challenge. I had to focus on learning the basics and apply my knowledge of teaching to a new concept. I taught Microsoft Word and PowerPoint at Illini West High School and Microsoft Excel and Access at West Prairie High School along with Introduction to Accouting. With Microsoft Word, I focused on using the pre-made templates to show students how to format and create Newsletters, Flyers, Brochures, Resumes, Cover Letters, Calendars, Research Papers, and so on. For Microsoft PowerPoint, the students are learning how to format and create PowerPoints and Prezis. Eventually, the students will showcase all they have learned and created by making their own websites. Microsoft Excel lessons placed a heavy emphasis on using Excel for businesses. Students learned how to compare leasing versus buying a vehicle, prepare paycheck information, research and display costs of colleges, create menus and list prices of additions or deletions to a certain dish, etc. Microsoft Access taught students how to use formulas, functions, and charts to query between several or many Excel documents in order to form a coherent single document. In other words, Access taught students to set up a common variable between Excel worksheets to better understand data trends. Introduction to Accounting revolved around the overarching theme that Assets equals Liability plus Owners' Equity. Students practiced preparing payrolls, insurance options for a company, etc.
